Relevant Sulawesi Contacts North and Central Sulawesi, and Togian Islands

The best source of current information is Pak Alex at the Melati Hotel in Gorontalo, Gorontalo Province. Now over 60 years old, he is an encyclopedia of information as well as being the most reliable source of current information.
Pak Alex speaks English, Dutch and German as well as his native Indonesian. Please do be aware that the hotel is now rather run-down with little service. Pak Alex is getting older and has memory problems, but still remembers his history and languages.

From overseas, call: (+62-435) 821853 or 822934
From inside Indonesia, call: (0435) 821-853 or 822-934

His son has a cyber cafe as well, so you can Email the Melati also.

South Sulawesi and Toraja to Central and North Sulawesi

For travellers from Toraja heading for the Togian Islands: it is very dangerous by bus, as buses get shot up between Pendolo, Tentena and Poso. Best to use the PELNI service from either Makasar or Pare-Pare, or the bad coastal road up to Palu. Note: if you are using U.S. dollar cash, be sure the $100 and $50 notes have absolutely no marks, stamps, folds, handwriting or damage on them! In Palu the banks are awful about that. Of them, Danamon is the best, from my experience.

Flight information is quite fluid. Peter Blumtritt's North Sulawesi Information pages has written of more flights, and the discontinuation of others, from Taiwan and the Philippines to Manado. Check it out.

Note: Buy domestic tickets INSIDE Indonesia--much cheaper. The contacts above can give you the latest information.
